The question of Why? It’s a seemingly simple question but often with the most complex and profound answers.
In my work, I try to transcend a single medium by working with ideas and asking questions.
Much like a scientist, an artist needs to be able to ask big questions. Scientists don't know what the questions are until they go through a process of material exploration. This is very similar to what an artist does. At the boundary of knowledge and understanding are possibilities for surprises, awe, and transcendence of the moment.
In my work I attempt to blur the boundaries between aesthetics and transcendent experience using repetitive actions, meditative practices, and serial forms. In many of my artwork’s everyday actions, such as counting or sitting, become two- and three-dimensional performative activities that bring awareness of the viewer's role in contemplating the work.
Central to my work is the human body as a biological form that is the interface and vehicle to connect with our physical world. While striking for their vibrant color and density of imagery, my works try to emphasize the metaphysical aspects of our bodies and minds, that are constrained by the physics of our bodies.
I want my viewer to feel and contemplate the interconnectivity, and the complexity of systems that we live with, and the histories imbued into the objects made by people for other people.
Although it is my goal to represent subjects that are visually or conceptually or thematically complex, I strive to create and express them in forms that come across as sincere and genuine, and accessible.
I’m working towards having a body of work that is not contained within a gallery but work that is public and can engage on an equal level with its urban and natural surroundings; to be a public artist that creates at the scale of life and interacts with an audience in an enriching way.
